He enlisted as a Regular soldier in the 2nd Battalion DLI and served in the Egyptian War, 1885-86. He later joined the 3rd (Militia) Battalion DLI at Barnard Castle as a Colour Sergeant on the Permanent Staff and served with 3 DLI in the Boer War.
After 1908, he moved to 6 DLI as a Company Sergeant Major and was Regimental Sergeant Major by 1914. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1916 "for conspicuously good and efficient work", particularly at the 2nd Battle of Ypres in April 1915.
In late 1917, he was forced by ill-health to return home, after nearly three years active service on the Western Front.
George Perry died at South Shields in 1926.
